Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) water
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk (or almond/oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter (or coconut oil for dairy-free)
  • 1 tablespoon (12g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature (or 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce for egg-free)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • Chocolate sauce (optional, for dipping)
  • Dulce de leche (optional, for dipping)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
  • Nutella or peanut butter (optional, for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine water, milk, butter, sugar, and salt. Heat over medium until butter melts and mixture just begins to boil.
  3. Remove from heat and immediately add flour. Stir quickly with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides.
  4. Let dough rest in the pan for 5 minutes to cool slightly.
  5. Transfer dough to a large mixing bowl. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla extract. If dough is too thick to pipe, add a splash of milk.
  6. Spoon dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip, or use a zip-top bag with the corner snipped. Pipe 2-inch strips or bite-sized rounds onto the prepared baking sheet. Alternatively, drop spoonfuls for rustic shapes.
  7. Bake for 15-18 minutes, rotating the tray halfway, until churro snacks are golden brown and puffed.
  8. While snacks bake, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl for coating.
  9. Remove snacks from oven and let cool for 2 minutes. While still warm, roll each snack in cinnamon sugar until generously coated.
  10. Arrange churro snacks on a platter. Serve warm with optional dips or drizzles.

Notes

For best results, coat churro snacks in cinnamon sugar while warm. Dough can be customized with citrus zest, cocoa powder, or seasonal spices. For gluten-free or dairy-free, use suggested swaps. Churro snacks are best served fresh but can be reheated in the oven for crispness. Imperfect shapes taste just as good!
