  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup water or beef broth
  • 8 soft taco shells or corn tortillas
  • Shredded lettuce (for topping)
  • Diced tomatoes (for topping)
  • Grated cheese (for topping)
  • Sour cream (for topping)
  • Avocado slices (for topping)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prep the ingredients: Chop the onion, mince the garlic, and measure out the spices.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned (about 5-7 minutes).
  3. Stir in the chopped onion and garlic. Cook for 3 minutes until softened.
  4. Sprinkle in the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir well to coat the beef evenly.
  5. Mix in the tomato paste and pour in water or beef broth. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens.
  6. Warm the tortillas in a dry skillet, microwave, or toaster oven until soft and pliable.
  7. Spoon the beef mixture into warmed tortillas. Add your favorite toppings, squeeze a little lime juice over the top, and serve immediately.

Notes

For a leaner option, use ground turkey or chicken. To make it spicier, add cayenne or diced jalapeños. Toasting tortillas in a skillet enhances their flavor.
