Ingredients

Scale
  • Small pearl onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Oil for frying (canola or vegetable oil)
  • Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch, spicy mayo)

Instructions

  1. Peel the pearl onions and slice them into a blooming shape, making vertical cuts around the onion while keeping the root intact.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
  4. Set up a third bowl with bread crumbs for coating.
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Dip each onion in the dry mixture, then the wet mixture, and finally coat them in bread crumbs.
  7. Carefully place the onions into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  8. Remove the onions from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain.
  9. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Maintain a consistent oil temperature of 350°F for the best results. Fry in small batches to avoid overcrowding and ensure even cooking. Serve immediately for maximum crispiness.
