A sweet and savory green bean side dish featuring crispy bacon, brown sugar, and soy sauce. Perfect for fall gatherings, cozy dinners, and festive holiday meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, washed and ends trimmed (or frozen green beans, thawed and drained)
  • 4 slices thick-cut bacon
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Wash the green beans thoroughly under cold water and trim the ends. If using frozen green beans, make sure they’re thawed and drained.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 6-8 minutes. Remove the bacon from the skillet and set it aside on a paper towel to drain, reserving the grease in the pan.
  3. In a small mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, soy sauce, unsalted butter, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  4. Add the green beans to the skillet with the reserved bacon grease. Toss to coat and cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they’re tender but still slightly crunchy.
  5. Pour the brown sugar-soy sauce mixture over the green beans and stir to coat. Let the beans cook for an additional 3-5 minutes, allowing the glaze to thicken and caramelize. Stir frequently to prevent burning.
  6. Crumble the cooked bacon into small pieces and sprinkle it over the green beans. Stir to combine and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  7. Transfer the green beans to a serving dish, making sure to drizzle any remaining glaze over the top. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

[‘Don’t overcook the green beans to keep them tender and slightly crunchy.’, ‘Use thick-cut bacon for maximum flavor and texture.’, ‘Adjust sweetness by reducing brown sugar or adding a splash of vinegar.’, ‘Keep an eye on the glaze to prevent burning; stir frequently and use medium heat.’, ‘Prepare bacon and glaze ahead of time for easier assembly.’]
