  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and slice the Yukon Gold potatoes into 1/8-inch (3 mm) thick rounds, aiming for consistent slices.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, melted butter, minced garlic, chopped fresh thyme, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  4. Lightly butter your baking dish.
  5. Arrange a single layer of potato slices covering the bottom of the dish.
  6. Pour a few spoonfuls of the cream mixture over the layer, then sprinkle a generous handful of shredded Gruyere cheese.
  7. Repeat layering potatoes, cream mixture, and cheese until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of cheese.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes to brown the cheese on top.
  10. Check tenderness by inserting a fork into the potatoes; if firm, bake another 5-10 minutes loosely covered.
  11. Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.

Notes

Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices to ensure uniform cooking. Keep the dish covered with foil for the first 40 minutes to trap steam and prevent drying out. Let the dish rest after baking to thicken the sauce. If cheese browns too quickly, tent with foil. For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream. For dairy-free, use coconut cream and vegan cheese.
