A quick and easy recipe for crispy, golden mozzarella sticks made in the air fryer with a triple coating for extra crunch and gooey cheese inside.

  • Mozzarella cheese sticks, about 1 ounce (28g) each
  • ½ cup (60g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten (room temperature)
  • 1 ½ cups (150g) panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup (25g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Cooking spray or olive oil

Instructions

  1. Freeze the mozzarella sticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Coat each frozen mozzarella stick by rolling in flour, dipping in egg wash, then rolling in breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently.
  4. Repeat the egg wash and breadcrumb coating for a double layer for extra crunch.
  5. Freeze the coated sticks again for 30 minutes to set the coating.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 5 minutes.
  7. Lightly spray or brush the air fryer basket with cooking spray or olive oil.
  8. Arrange the mozzarella sticks in a single layer without overcrowding.
  9. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
  10. Check that the cheese is melted and gooey inside; add 1-2 minutes if needed but avoid overcooking.
  11. Serve immediately while hot and gooey.

Notes

Freeze the sticks before and after coating to prevent cheese from oozing out. Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch and press them gently to adhere well. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket for even cooking. Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes to restore crispiness.
