A quick and easy recipe for crispy onion rings made in the air fryer, delivering a crunchy coating and tender onion center without the grease of deep frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium yellow onions, peeled and sliced into ½-inch thick rings
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour (can substitute gluten-free flour)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten (room temperature)
  • 1 ½ cups (150g) panko breadcrumbs (preferably Japanese-style)
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk (whole or 2%, dairy-free alternatives like almond milk work)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Cooking spray
  • Optional: pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Optional: ¼ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Slice 2 medium yellow onions into ½-inch thick rings. Separate each ring and pat dry with paper towels to reduce moisture.
  2. Set up dredging stations: In one bowl, mix 1 cup flour with ½ tsp salt and ¼ tsp black pepper. In another bowl, whisk 2 eggs with ½ cup milk. In a third bowl, combine 1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs with 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste, and optional Parmesan.
  3. Dredge each onion ring first in the flour mixture, shaking off excess. Dip into the egg wash, letting excess drip off. Press into the breadcrumb mixture for an even coating. Repeat the egg wash and breadcrumb step for a double coating.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 3 minutes.
  5. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray. Arrange onion rings in a single layer without overlapping. Lightly spray the tops of the rings with cooking spray.
  6. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8 minutes. Flip the rings, spray lightly again, and cook for another 5-7 minutes until golden and crispy.
  7. Transfer cooked rings to a cooling rack or paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Dry onions thoroughly before breading to ensure coating sticks well. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to avoid soggy rings. Flip halfway through cooking and spray lightly with cooking spray again for even crispiness. Use a kitchen timer and check at 10 minutes to avoid burning. For gluten-free, substitute flour and panko with almond flour and crushed gluten-free crackers.
