A quick and fun twist on classic Rice Krispie treats shaped like apples, perfect for teacher appreciation gifts or classroom parties. These treats combine a crispy, buttery marshmallow base with a bright red candy coating and a cute green candy leaf.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups (150g) Rice Krispies cereal
  • 10 oz (283g) marshmallows (regular or mini)
  • 3 tbsp (42g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (170g) red candy melts or red-tinted white chocolate
  • Green candy melts or green decorating gel (for the leaf)
  • Mini chocolate chips or pretzel sticks (optional, for apple stems)
  • Non-stick cooking spray or butter (for greasing hands and pans)

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a large baking sheet or line it with parchment paper. Grease your hands with butter or non-stick spray to avoid sticking during shaping (5 minutes).
  2. In a large saucepan over low heat, melt 3 tablespoons (42g) of unsalted butter until just melted and bubbling slightly (2-3 minutes).
  3. Stir in 10 ounces (283g) of marshmallows until completely melted and smooth (4-5 minutes). Remove from heat immediately once melted.
  4. Quickly fold in 6 cups (150g) of Rice Krispies cereal with a wooden spoon, stirring gently to coat evenly (2-3 minutes).
  5. Transfer the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Use a greased spatula or wax paper to press it down evenly to about 1-inch (2.5 cm) thickness. Let it cool for 10 minutes until firm but pliable.
  6. Use an apple-shaped cookie cutter to press and cut out shapes. If unavailable, carve apple shapes freehand with a butter knife. Place cut treats on a parchment-lined tray (10 minutes).
  7. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt about 1 cup (170g) of red candy melts or white chocolate tinted red in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth (2-3 minutes).
  8. Coat each apple-shaped treat with the red candy coating using a spoon or dipping tool. Let excess drip off and place back on parchment to set (10-15 minutes). For shinier finish, use a cooling rack.
  9. While coating is still soft, add a small dab of green candy melts or decorating gel for the leaf. Insert a mini chocolate chip or tiny pretzel stick to mimic the apple stem (5 minutes).
  10. Allow the coated treats to fully set at room temperature or in the fridge for 15-20 minutes before packaging or serving.

Notes

Grease hands well to prevent sticking. Melt marshmallows on low heat to avoid burning. Let candy coating set fully before stacking or wrapping. If candy coating thickens, gently reheat in short bursts. Freezing is possible but may alter texture slightly.
