A quick and easy recipe for flaky, fluffy heart-shaped danishes filled with a creamy vanilla-lemon cream cheese mixture and topped with fresh strawberries. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or any cozy morning treat.

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (full-fat recommended)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
  • All-purpose flour (for dusting work surface)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  3. Lightly dust work surface with flour. Roll out one sheet of puff pastry to about 12×12 inches.
  4. Cut heart shapes about 4 inches wide from the puff pastry using a cookie cutter or knife. Arrange on baking sheet with space between.
  5. Score a smaller heart inside each puff pastry heart about 1/2 inch from the edge, being careful not to cut through.
  6. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese mixture into the center of each heart, spreading slightly but staying inside the scored border.
  7. Top each with 3-4 slices of fresh strawberries.
  8. Beat the egg with 1 tablespoon water. Brush the edges of each heart with the egg wash.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Watch closely to avoid burning edges.
  10. Transfer to a cooling rack and let cool for 5 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Keep puff pastry and tools cold to ensure proper puffing. Do not cut through the scored inner heart to maintain the puffed border. Avoid overfilling to prevent sogginess. If edges brown too quickly, tent with foil. Let danishes cool before serving to set filling and keep pastry crisp. Reheat leftovers in oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes; avoid microwaving.
